Group A - Week 2 - Chris

  1. Hi Chris, I agree that the big picture is important with young ones and the reading process. As well as being able to have those core reading elements laid as a foundation.
I'm wondering if perhaps you would reconsider "problem solving" as being a necessary part of a reading program. I would consider using context clues, or root word association or applying grammar rules to figure out a word or it's meaning a way of problem solving. What do you think?

    1. Jessie...what did you say "sorry" for? Did I miss something?

  3. One thing I wanted to comment on what you both are saying her is the concept of the "big picture." Teaching concepts or the big picture are so important. Our goals as reading teachers or teachers of anything really is to help build that big picture for our students and then from there help them learn the skills or smaller bits of knowledge. Starting with the big picture first helps to bring meaning and context for the reader/learner. Once there is a bigger picture for the student, i.e. a whole story with authentic language and pictures, then we can help students learn the skills, i.e. letter sounds, spelling, etc. Thoughts?

  4. I can appreciate your description of emerging readers relying mostly on sounds and rules for sounding out, but I also think problem- solving in the sense of deciding which strategies to use is very important for them right after that initial memorization/emergent reader stage. And it is crucial to understand that there are different stages, but within a class there will be such a variety of readers, all those concepts and more will need to be offered as reading tools. It starts to feel like splitting hairs a little, and I think you're right about keeping an eye on the big picture skills that is the most important.-Heather

  5. Chris,

I agree with you and Jill about the concept of the "big picture." Laying the groundwork with learning the basics and helping them see the context will build the foundation of the reading process. Building on the student's knowledge of reading I think will help motivate students. It is interesting to think about mastering reading, I still don't know if I have mastered it. haha
