My reflection on What is reading? and how is the reading process and learning process connected?

  1. Reading and learning are maybe interchangeable thing because you learn to read, and read to learn... I don't think reading is really reading until we understand and comprehend what it is that we are reading. Letters, words, symbols, numbers, pictures, etc. are meaningless without a knowledge of what they stand for.

  2. Hi Stacia, I agree that reading cannot be without understanding. We can visually scan a page, a screen, and look at the words and symbols but not attach any meaning. Sometimes I feel that as an adult now it is impossible to not attach meaning to what we read :)

  3. You are right that you cannot be reading without comprehending the words and their meanings. Students should love to read because it can make them successful, especially at a young age. Reading exposes the students to so many different things giving them the opportunity to expand their knowledge.

  4. I was thinking the same thing as Karina when I listened to your Yodio - that we learn to read and read to learn (only maybe not so succinctly). I think that you shared some valid points and I agree with you that a strong foundation in reading at elementary levels can really help give students a strong, lifelong tool.
