i agree that passing test and getting good grades in not necessarily a great indicator of how a student is progressing in the reading process, the question was what words should not be incorporated in a reading program for elementary school. So I have to say that yes, tests and grades does play a role in a reading program. I don't necessarily agree with this evaluation system being the sum of a students achievement, but it is an indicator on how the student is doing.
Stacia- I also agree with you and Karina that passing tests and getting good grades is not part of the reading process. I think that you did a great job explaining the reason why they should not be part of the reading process, but I would have liked to hear your opinion on how getting good grades and passing tests affect the students. I also agree with you that getting good grades can either motivate them or it can get them to hate reading. -Mayra
You make a good point about grades and reading motivation. It is hard to tell whether the external motivation of a grade is helpful or not in terms of building life long readers. Grades could motivate someone to start reading when they otherwise wouldn't and grades might discourage someone from reading when they otherwise would.
