Hi All,

I hope this works. I'm in Group R.

  1. I had forgotten to mention the idea that we first learn to read, then read to learn in my own Yodio post. It is so true, and you conveyed that idea very well in your post. Your examples of traffic signs and travel books were a good way to get your point across. Nice job!

  2. I enjoyed the strong connection you made between reading and learning- we learn to read, and read to learn! As adults we tend to forget how hard it once was to learn to read, but in fact, this process is one of the first complex learning tasks we master as a child! I also found it useful that you pointed out the function of a word, both inside and outside the context provided by a sentence or sentence fragment. Language is complex in that a word not only can carry multiple, sometimes differing definitions, and then become strengthened or transformed by the words found around it! You bring up some strong and important aspects of reading in your response :)

  3. Your post made me think about the isolated letters and sounds, the words and their independent meaning, and the transformed meaning they take on when in the context of a sentence. When we did the activity in week 1 regarding images, I looked at each symbol first in it's own context. I was so busy analyzing each image, I did not attempt to move beyond decoding the image to find deeper meaning, or explore whether or not they connected. It reminds me to consider the struggle students experience when they aren't yet adept readers and they are expected to read to understand, for example, directions on a worksheet. It is easy to forget that that element (comprehending directions by reading them) of the worksheet is probably the most difficult part for early readers. It is really so important it is for students need to have a good foundation of the meaning of words in their own meaningful context before they can be expected of to use reading as a tool to learn other things.
