seems like there are at least 3 parts to reading... (maybe more as we go about this class and gain more knowledge on the subject) but to me reading is a 3 part process: #1 learning the sight and sounds of letters (or symbols) #2 putting those letters, symbols together to form a word #3 comprehension of those words to derive meaning.

I also learned to speak Spanish in a similar way. Talk about "exercising your brain"! I like that you mentioned how important it is to exercise the brain to learn new concepts. I do think that the first step of reading is only looking at symbols and the second part is about making meaning. I'm thinking about this because sometimes I visually scan something without taking the time to use my brain and make meaning. Just a thought. --Ivy
I really like the relation that you made between language and writing. I found it interesting. I also agree with you that reading is not something that you learn and then you are finished. Reading can take you to places you've never been. In addition, I believe that reading can help expand our vocabulary. I learned English as a Second Language and since I was only speaking Spanish at home, I didn't have the vocabulary that an English-only speaker did. I still find myself learning new words and their meanings. -Mayra
I think the points you made about how reading and learning were connected is exactly what I would say. I like the statment you made about how "when you exercise your brain it opens other thinking process and opens to learning all around" I think this was interesting and I totally agree with. I think that was interesting how you learned spanish and I can completely understand how that can be an easier way to understand and learn spanish. Great response overall!
