Group E, Week 2 - Angelee Kenyon

Here are my thoughts on our "reading is" list...

  1. I had a similar conclusion. At first I thought the passing grades, and taking tests doesn't really have anything to do with the reading process. But... we use these 2 things to essentially evaluate and access where children are in the process so in a way yes, they need to be part of a reading program for school.

  2. Interesting perspectives. It brings up lots of questions for me--I won't ask too many of them. :) If reading is about the process, why do you think the focus has become so strongly on assessment? The same question stands for Karina's comment as well--If assessment is part of the reading process, why has it become the national focus? Thoughts?

  3. Angelee-
I really liked that you were able to relate this exercise to readings we have done in other classes. It is nice to see that everything we are doing is somehow connected!! I agree with you that students learn at different rates. I also feel that getting good grades can be a good motivator for students to get even better grades, but what happens to those students that are pushed too hard in order to get good grades and give up reading? Should we put our students in that situation that can possibly cause them to fail?

  5. I agree with Mayra that getting good grades can be a motivator but what does happen if they don't get good grades and they start to give up on reading? I think that getting good grades can be linked to the reading process but don't think that should be directly linked. I feel as if grades sometimes don't define how much a student learns and understands. Sometimes this can push students way from enjoying reading. Overall good job on this response.

  6. Apologies to all of you for missing the comment deadline. I completely spaced it Wednesday due to a potentially traumatic day. I will do better next week.
