Here is my Yodio for week one. I am in Group S!

  1. Hey Jody! Nice job articulating your thoughts on this Yodio device :) I found it hard to put my thoughts together while on the phone talking to myself. Did you write it down? Other than that, I thought you and I had the same thought process. I know that literacy is being pushed in all academic subjects now, not only reading and english classes. I feel that it's the most important skill for a student to master within their education, yet we graduated numerous illiterate high school students every year. I'm like you, still struggling figuring out how to encourage students to read, write and enjoy literacy in general.

    1. Yes Melissa I do write down my thoughts prior to recording, and then I ad lib a bit. That is the only way I can ensure that I kept it to under 2 minutes, it is too hard to watch a timer and think and talk coherently.

  2. I think we are all learning that one of the first steps we will need to take as teachers is giving our students LOTS of resources and LOTS of time for reading. Jody, I agree with everything you said. We all kind of had the same ideas or said some things a little different but I think we can all agree with what each person said. (I also write down my ideas before recording)

  3. Ok, this week I'm going to script out my Yodio a bit better. I had notes but Jody, and Scott, you two sounded well rehearsed, Melissa, you did a nice job too, but like me I think we were both a little "weirded out" with the new technology :)

After all that, Jody, I too really re-looked at reading as a multi-faceted process and have rediscovered that it is so much more than just scanning letters and words and soaking up thoughts into the brain. A reader may not catch a few words, but they can get the gist of the sentence. They may not understand a sentence's context, but gather the theme of the paragraph, and they may not get all the points but may embrace the philosophy of the author's greater mission in his or her writing. And Scott, I agree that in all of our subjects, we need to provide ample opportunity for reading, and not just in textbooks. For me, in science, that is what I've been used to and how to scan text to pull out relevant information for the inevitable multiple choice test to come. I'm hoping to give my students, especially in high school, a chance to dig into some very rich scientific journal articles on cutting edge research and really pick them apart to really think about them and learn.
