Group E: Week 4-Stacia

  1. Stacia-
I really liked that you had a variety of books with different reading levels available for your student. I think that it makes the reader more interested if they have options. I also think that it is great that your student was able to at least attempt to read the text in the higher reading level books. I have had experiences with students that just shut down and will not attempt to read when they come across text that is challenging for them.

  2. Isn't it nice to see a child struggle within themselves to read with competence while using their own strategies to accomplish the reading. It is good to see a confident reader who believes in their own abilities and even when struggling they don't give up and expect someone to do it for them. They try their best and give it their all. Great job on bringing multi-level text to really get a feel for his abilities. And the different styles of reading was a great choice as well.

    1. The key word here is "confidence." Learning to read, aka learning, involves so much risk taking. We have to design reading programs where our students feel safe to take risks.

  3. Hi Stacia,
What a good idea to bring a newspaper article. I never would have thought of that. You chose a nice selection of books, as well, with a lot of variety in content and complexity. I found it hard to apply Smith's rules, but I tried very hard to be conscientious about it. I also enjoyed the opportunity to try and figure out the capabilities of my student. I think it was enlightening for both him and me.
