  1. I found it interesting that your student skipped over small words - I wonder what his psychology is behind this method - are these words less important, or not worth reading out loud, or some other reason? From what you've told, your LP student understands the passage and is able to talk articulately about what he read, but this particular aspect of your post fascinates me.

    1. I'm not sure. I think it falls under the "some other reason" category. Perhaps those words go into his mind, just not out of his mouth? He has ADD, maybe it has something to do with that. He hasn't been able to articulate to me about what happens when he skips those words. At any rate, it doesn't seem to affect his comprehension. I think if he makes a concerted effort to practice not skipping those words he will be golden.

    2. So many of us skip words as we read. Our brains fill them in in our minds. What's tricky is to determine if the words we fill in change the meaning or not.

  2. I also found it interesting that your child skips over the small words. I could see if the child was still learning "the" or "of" as sight words because kids do struggle with words they cannot sound out, at first. However, since your child is in fifth grade, I would doubt that is the problem. I wonder if he just gets going and skips them on accident. If the sentence didn't make sense after that, you would think he might go back, though. Interesting...

  3. It sounds like you had an interesting experience, and had some good clues to your reader's process (the one you got to do a running record on). It does sound like she was reading ahead of her thoughts a little to insert there before it appeared in the sentence. Then her comprehension was a little off. I wonder if she was feeling pressured. Was she reading at a pretty good pace? It's interesting to hear about these experiences on our Yodios. Thanks for sharing Meagan!
