It just goes to show how practice is a large key in the reading process. My student is in 2nd grade as well and she said reads the same book again and again.
Chris, I enjoyed your Yodio reflections and analysis. It was very thorough and good. It sounds as though you've found an LP student who will also benefit from extra time with you; maybe you could take him on long-term and help him with getting more reading time! Did you try reading anything other than books? I'm curious because you were pleasantly surprised about his reading level and comprehension. I wonder if you had him read a couple pages from a low-level graphic novel or even a comic strip, how he would do. I really like that you noticed that he needed refocusing so he didn't skip over the smaller words, and were able to help him by using your finger. You could suggest that he do that for himself too, so that he slows down and doesn't lose his place. Great job!
Were his numbers in the right range on the running records? Was he reading an appropriate leveled book ? I agree with Heather, sounds like you guys have a symbiotic relationship! Jessie
