  1. You are allows very detailed in your responses. You had some good ideas about things you could do in your classroom. I too, really like visualization because it is such a versatile technique. You can use it in all aspects of the class, in sports, for self motivation, etc.

  2. I like that you used the two second grade teachers to compare strategies. The idea of having your students break down a bigger picture is a good one.

    Do you remember any instances as a child where you used inventive spelling? I ask because my mom has a filing cabinet full of things that my brothers and sister and I made through various stages of our lives. A few years ago I came across one of mine, probably pre-school/early kindergarten age, where I had written a story about balloons. Only I spelled balloons "bloons" throughout the whole thing. Reading it then I thought, "Oh my god... my spelling was horrible!" and wondered how I made it through. But, after this week's lesson I realized that I wasn't spelling poorly at all, but that I was, in fact, using inventive spelling. "B" says "buh buh buh..." So, I was writing Buhloons.

      I honestly do not remember using inventive spelling. However, I have a daughter and she is in Kindergarten so she is learning to read and write. I have noticed that her writing looks like Paul's in the reading we did. It was amazing to me that I was able to see the connection. In addition, she asked similar questions as Paul did, such as, "Am I spelling it correctly?" I also noticed that she too, would spell the same word differently at times, like Paul did. I just thought it was amazing. I bet it was nice for you to look at your work when you were just learning to write.

  3. I agree with Anglee that it was a great idea to compare and contrast the two 2nd grade teachers. I think that it is great to get ideas from teachers on different learning styles. This helps you take away teaching styles that will help you in the classroom and although you agreed more with one teachers teachings style it is always great to take in consideration another teaching style and learn from it. Because all students learn differently and one style may work for one student and another for a different student. What are some strategies that Becky discussed that you would use in the classroom. I know you agreed more with Rachael's teaching style but do you think you would use any of Becky's teaching styles? Overall great resonse this week.

  4. I like what you said about students will eventually show interest in spelling. I have had to hang on to this concept while watching my second grader learn to write. She has paid little attention to spelling this year and last and I have had to sit on my hands when correcting her writing. I have also thought a lot about the concept that children will eventually learn the "correct" usage of language by getting feedback from their peers. I rarely correct my daughter's grammar, but when she uses a word wrong or the incorrect form of a verb, her friends let her know it! Anyway, I think this is connected to the idea of creating classroom structures where children can offer each other feedback and help them to improve their spelling throughout the reading process.
