Emily Group D, Week 4

  1. An autistic student! It's great that he can he can read so well and can explain his feelings toward it- even if he says he doesn't like it. If the text was really too hard he probably wouldn't be able to read it, so it sounds like he has a confidence issue.

  2. Emily, I think it is interesting to hear you describe an autistic students take on the reading. I have come across a few autistic kids at different level of functionality. It sounds like he functions at a relatively high level. By understanding how he perceives things I think it gives some insight into understanding how we learn. Thanks for sharing this with us. I look forward to hearing more about your PL student.

  3. You said he chose the book from materials you brought with you. Had he ever read the book before? I think it is important that he is able to explain his feelings towards reading so well to you. I think you have a great grasp on his reading abilities and helping him find more enjoyment in reading.

  4. I think you're right that finding a way for him to connect his life experiences to what he is reading would probably make the reading more enjoyable for him.

Has he ever enjoyed reading? Or does it sound like he has always disliked it because he has always thought it's too hard? I wonder what really sparks his interest and if he might enjoy reading more if he gets to read something he's passionate about, or if it will still be "too hard."

connecting life to reading would probably make the reading more enjoyable for him
