I am also working with a second grader and how a fairly similar experience. One of the books he chose was his favorite and I think he practically had it memorized. Another book I chose was slightly more difficult and he had a tougher time with that one. Lots of sounding out and guessing on the bigger words. Overall he did a pretty good job, though.
Sounds like the second book, Chris, gave you some good insights into his reading process. It's a challenge to find just the right text where they struggle a bit, but not so much that it distracts from the meaning for them.
Mike, It's nice that you can work with someone who you've known for a while. I'm sure that makes her comfortable with you. Did you do a running record with her? What were you able to notice, if you did? How is her comprehension?
Neat that she really likes the book Spider and the Fly even though she had some difficulty with it. Maybe it's exciting that the words aren't familiar... Still sweet that she likes it because her mom gave it to her. What a great way to expand her vocabulary though. Jessie
